The journey to Beyond Bol
Long before representing our country at the Olympics and achieving national records, there was a 16-year-old student running his very first race at a school athletics carnival in Perth.
That student was Nagmeldin “Peter” Bol.
Peter’s talent caught the eye of his teacher, Helen Leahy. Recognising something special, she and her father, Brian Moore, saw beyond the athlete; they saw a “fine young man deserving of help.”
Buying his first pair of running shoes, enrolling him in an athletics club, and later funding interstate competitions, their support enabled Peter's successful career in sport.
This experience and the success that followed ignited the idea behind the Beyond Bol Foundation.
Peter’s story is one of courage, resilience, dedication, and the unwavering pursuit of possibility.
Born in Sudan, Peter fled civil war at six years old. He and his family sought safety in Egypt for four years before migrating to Toowoomba, Australia, without a word of english.
By 2008, Peter was in Perth on a sports scholarship - not for running, but for basketball.
Within a few years, Peter broke the Australian Junior 800m record, then moved to Melbourne to train under renowned coach Justin Rinaldi. By 2016, he was representing Australia at the Rio Olympic Games.

Transforming young lives through the power of sport.

The achievements that followed:
-
Three-time Olympian (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2021, Paris 2024).
-
First Australian in 53 years to reach an Olympic 800m final.
-
Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist (Birmingham 2022).
-
Multiple Australian & Oceania records, incl. the 2025 national record of 1:42.55.
-
Humanitarian Award Winner for his work mentoring young people.
-
Young Australian of the Year (WA) in 2023.
-
Father, coach, mentor, and ambassador.
-
And in 2025, founder of the Beyond Bol Foundation.
We exist so more young people can experience what Peter once did: belief, belonging, and the opportunity to do something great.
Peter’s story is proof that when young people have the right support in place, not only can they excel in sport, they can grow into leaders who inspire others too.
Through our Sports Pathways Program, we use the power of sport to engage, uplift, and empower young people from CALD communities to thrive, lead and strengthen the communities around them.
Invest in potential. Inspire change.
